The short answer

Winston AI is a credit-based detector for AI text and images that claims 99.98% accuracy. Independent tests put it lower. The peer-reviewed RAID study found it caught 93.7% to 96.1% of chat-model text at a 5% false positive rate, and results fall on short, edited or creative writing. Plagino has not benchmarked it.

What is the Winston AI detector?

Disclosure: Plagino makes a competing AI detector. Every figure below is labelled with who measured it. Winston AI is a trademark of its owner; Plagino is not affiliated with it.

Winston AI is a paid web platform that estimates whether text or images were made by AI. It is aimed at schools, publishers and content teams. You paste text, upload a file or scan an image. It returns a Human Score for the whole document and highlights the sentences it thinks are machine-written.

Winston has added features over the last two years, so many reviews describe an older product. A 2025 Quetext review said Winston supported only English and French. Winston's pricing page now lists AI detection in nine languages. If you read a review, check its date before you trust its feature list.

What does the Winston AI checker scan besides AI text?

Winston bundles four checks in one account: AI text detection, AI image and deepfake detection, a plagiarism checker and OCR. OCR (optical character recognition) reads text from scans, photos and handwriting, so a teacher can check a paper assignment. Winston's help center lists .docx, .pdf and .txt uploads, plus .jpg, .png and .tiff images in bulk uploads.

As of 18 October 2026, the pricing page lists AI detection in English, Spanish, Chinese (simplified), German, Polish, Portuguese, Italian, Ukrainian and Dutch. It also offers a Chrome extension and an API. Its plagiarism checker says it compares text with "400 billion webpages, documents and databases".

How does Winston AI score a document?

Winston shows two results: a Human Score for the whole document and a sentence-level AI Prediction Map. A low Human Score means Winston thinks most of the text is AI-written. The map colours individual sentences by how likely they are to be generated.

Length matters. The Chrome extension needs at least 500 characters, and Winston's help center recommends scanning at least 300 words when possible. It says very short snippets "produce less reliable results", and that heavy rewriting or "AI humanizer" tools can change the score. The same page says no AI detector "should be treated as an automatic guilty verdict".

How accurate is the Winston AI detector?

Winston AI is one of the better-tested detectors, but it is not as accurate as its 99.98% headline suggests. Its own tests report near-perfect results. Independent studies, run on older versions, report lower accuracy and large swings by text type and by the model that wrote the text.

Plagino has not tested Winston. Winston was not one of the seven tools in our March 2026 benchmark. So this section separates three kinds of evidence: Winston's own tests, independent research, and tests published by Winston's competitors.

What does Winston AI claim for Winston 5.0?

Winston's Winston 5.0 post, published 24 September 2026, reports 99.87% accuracy on 12,000 English documents. Half were human-written, from 10 categories such as college essays, news and Reddit posts. The other half came from 20 AI models by OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, xAI, DeepSeek, Mistral and Qwen. Winston says it wrongly flagged 7 human documents and missed 9 AI ones.

The same post reports zero false positives on 25,996 student essays in the PERSUADE 2.0 corpus. It reports 100% on 8,697 documents from a Chicago Booth benchmark and 98.54% on DetectRL-X, where it recognised 97.08% of human texts. Winston notes that the results cover only its English model and that documents under 500 characters were excluded. These are vendor-run tests. The 99.98% figure on its AI detector page comes with no published method.

What has independent research found?

The strongest independent evidence is RAID, a peer-reviewed benchmark from 2024 that tested Winston and three other commercial detectors. With thresholds set so that 5% of human text was flagged, Winston caught 96.1% of text from closed-source chat models such as ChatGPT with greedy decoding, and 93.7% with random sampling. On some open-source model output, its accuracy fell as low as 11.3%.

A 2023 study by Weber-Wulff and colleagues tested 14 tools on 54 documents and found none scored above 80%. Winston, listed as "Go Winston", was one of five that reached at least 70%. A 2026 study in Information Research by researchers at the University of Osijek compared Winston, Originality.ai, ZeroGPT and Smodin. Winston's help center says Winston had the highest standardised average, 99%. That study used 24 texts, so it is a small sample.

Why do Winston AI results vary so much?

Winston's accuracy depends on text length, genre and editing, and competitor-run tests show the spread most clearly. Originality.ai, which sells a rival detector, ran three ChatGPT-5 samples through Winston in October 2025. Winston scored a blog post 100% AI, a promotional email 87% AI and an e-book extract only 3% AI.

GPTZero, another competitor, reported in January 2025 that Winston rated a 22,000-word human novel 100% human, even after two ChatGPT paragraphs were added to the first page. Originality.ai also cites University of Florida research putting Winston at 75.9% and 82% on two academic-abstract datasets. We could not find the original paper, so treat those numbers as a competitor's summary. These are small, vendor-run tests. Still, they agree on one point: long, unedited AI text is easier to catch than short, mixed or creative text.

How often does Winston AI flag human writing?

On published evidence, Winston flags human writing less often than many detectors, but not never. In the RAID study, Winston's false positive rate ranged from 0.21% to 0.75% at fixed thresholds. The paper says none of the commercial detectors it tested went above 1.7%.

Winston reports 7 false positives in 6,000 human documents for version 5.0, about 0.12%. That is a vendor result. In Plagino's benchmark, Plagino wrongly flagged 0.8% of 500 human-written documents (95% interval roughly 0.3% to 2.0%), and Turnitin flagged 1.4%. Those numbers come from different tests, so they cannot be compared directly.

A low average rate does not protect one writer. A 2023 Stanford study found that several detectors labelled more than half of the TOEFL essays it tested as AI-written. Formal, formulaic and second-language writing carries more risk with any detector. Our guide to AI detector false positives explains why. If you have been flagged, read what to do if you are falsely accused of using AI.

How do Plagino and Winston AI compare side by side?

Winston is a broad integrity platform with credit-based plans. Plagino is a focused pre-submission check for Word documents. The table labels each accuracy figure with who measured it, because no single test covers both tools.

How much does Winston AI cost?

Winston AI has no ongoing free plan; it uses monthly credits, and each word scanned for AI costs one credit. As of 18 October 2026, its pricing page lists a free 14-day trial with 2,000 credits, then three plans.

Essential is $18 a month, or $10 a month billed annually, for 100,000 credits. Advanced is $29 a month, or $16 billed annually, for 200,000 credits and up to 5 team members. Elite is $49 a month, or $26 billed annually, for 500,000 credits and unlimited team members.

The page was also showing a 50% coupon code. Each scan can be up to 200,000 characters. Prices from older reviews ($12 a month, a 7-day trial, 80,000 credits) no longer match the pricing page.

What does one essay cost in Winston credits?

A 3,000-word essay uses 3,000 credits for an AI scan, so the 2,000-credit trial cannot scan it in one go. Reviews by fast.io and GPTZero report that plagiarism checks cost 2 credits per word. Winston's pricing page does not state this, so confirm it in your account. On that basis, the table below shows what one 3,000-word essay costs.

Winston credits for one 3,000-word essay
CheckCredits usedEssays per Essential month (100,000 credits)
AI detection only3,000About 33
AI detection + plagiarism (if 2 credits per word)9,000About 11

On Plagino Pro, the same essay is one of 20 scans a day whatever its length, up to the 10MB file limit. A student checking one essay a week will fit either tool. A teacher marking a class set will hit Winston's credit limits faster than Plagino's daily scan limit.

What happens to your text on Winston AI?

Winston stores the text and images you submit so you can see reports in your dashboard. Its privacy policy, last updated 17 July 2026, says deleted reports leave active storage within 30 days. They may stay in encrypted backups for up to 90 days after that. Winston says it does not use your submitted content to train AI models without explicit, opt-in consent.

Plagino's handling of your files is set out in its privacy policy. Plagino's plagiarism check matches passages against open-access academic literature through CORE. It does not search the open web, paywalled journals or other students' papers, and it cannot see Turnitin's private repository.

Should you use Winston AI or Plagino?

Pick the tool that matches what you need to check. Winston covers more formats and languages. Plagino is built for one academic document at a time, with a free plan that does not expire.

When is Winston AI the better choice?

Winston is the better pick if you need AI detection in a language other than English, or if you need to check scans, photos or handwritten work with OCR. It is also better if you want a web-wide plagiarism search or AI image detection in the same account. Plagino accepts only .docx files, and its published accuracy figures cover English essays only.

Winston also has peer-reviewed results with a low measured false positive rate, which many detectors cannot show. Publishers and teams that check a lot of short web copy may prefer its shared credit pools and team seats.

When is Plagino the better choice?

Plagino suits students and teachers who check whole essays and do not want to count words. Its free plan gives 3 scans a month with no time limit. Pro covers 20 scans a day, so essay length never changes the cost.

Each Plagino report puts sentence-level AI highlights and matched academic sources in one PDF. Its detection and false positive rates come from a published test with the method described. You can try Plagino's AI detector on a draft for free, or use the AI essay detector for a single paper. Whatever tool you use, treat a flag as a reason to reread, not as proof.

How was this comparison put together?

Plagino's figures come from one benchmark run in March 2026. It used 1,000 documents: 500 AI-written by GPT-4o, Claude and Gemini (some lightly edited) and 500 human-written. Each tool ran through its own web app on default settings, and a document counted as flagged if the tool flagged it at all. Turnitin caught more AI text than Plagino (98.2% vs 97.4%); Plagino had fewer false positives (0.8% vs 1.4%).

Winston was not in that run. RAID and Weber-Wulff tested earlier versions of Winston on different texts with different scoring rules. Winston's 99.98% and 99.87% figures are its own. The Originality.ai, GPTZero and University of Florida figures come from Winston's competitors. None of these numbers is directly comparable with Plagino's. Winston details were checked on 18 October 2026 and change often.

Frequently asked questions

Is Winston AI accurate?

Winston AI is fairly accurate on long, unedited AI text, but less accurate than its 99.98% claim. In the peer-reviewed RAID study, an earlier version caught 93.7% to 96.1% of closed-source chat-model text when 5% of human text was flagged. Accuracy fell sharply on some open-source model output.

Is Winston AI free?

No, Winston AI is not free beyond a 14-day trial with 2,000 credits. After the trial, plans start at $18 a month, or $10 a month billed annually, as of 18 October 2026. Plagino's free plan gives 3 scans a month with no time limit.

Is the Winston AI detector legit?

Yes, Winston AI is a real, established detector with independent, peer-reviewed results behind it. Its 99.98% headline is a vendor claim, not an independent finding. Use its score as one signal alongside drafts and writing history.

Does Winston AI give false positives?

Yes, Winston AI can flag human writing, though independent tests suggest it does so less than many tools. RAID measured 0.21% to 0.75% at fixed thresholds, and Winston reports 7 false positives in 6,000 human documents for version 5.0. Formal and second-language writing carries extra risk with any detector.

Can Winston AI detect Claude, Gemini and other models?

Winston says it detects text from ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and other models, and its 5.0 test included 20 generators from seven companies. Detection rates differ by model in third-party tests. No independent study we found tests Winston 5.0 on each model separately.

What is the minimum text length for Winston AI?

Winston needs at least 500 characters for a scan, and its help center recommends 300 words or more. Shorter text gives less reliable results.

Does Winston AI check for plagiarism?

Yes, Winston AI includes a plagiarism checker that compares text with web pages, documents and databases. Reviews report it uses 2 credits per word, double the AI check. Winston's pricing page does not state the rate, so confirm it in your account.

Can Winston AI read handwriting?

Yes, Winston AI uses OCR to read text from scanned documents, photos and handwriting, then scans that text. Winston does not publish separate accuracy figures for handwriting.

Does Winston AI keep my documents?

Yes, Winston stores submitted text and images so reports appear in your dashboard. Its privacy policy says deleted reports leave active storage within 30 days and may stay in encrypted backups for up to 90 days. It says it does not train AI models on your submitted content without opt-in consent.

Is Winston AI better than Turnitin?

Winston AI and Turnitin serve different users, and no independent study we found compares them on the same texts. Turnitin is sold only to institutions and checks a private repository of student papers that Winston cannot see. Winston is open to individuals and checks images, handwriting and nine languages.

Is Winston AI better than GPTZero?

It depends on what you check. Winston adds OCR, image detection and multilingual AI detection. GPTZero offers a free tier for individuals. See our Plagino vs GPTZero page for GPTZero's figures in our benchmark.

Has Plagino tested Winston AI?

No, Winston AI was not part of Plagino's March 2026 benchmark. This page uses Winston's own claims, independent studies and competitor tests instead, and labels each one.
